Why A Home Business? Why Work From Home?
Ah, the allure of home business. Articles are constantly written about the beauty of working at home.
There are many reasons why you would want to develop a home business or work at home. Some are:
1. Need more money for necessities
2. Develop independence
3. Desire for disposable income
A somewhat overlooked advantage of a home business is the tax benefit. Although one should primarily develop a home business for the economic benefits, the ability to reduce your income should not be ignored.
There are many aspects of tax deductibility regarding the expenses relating to a home business. Although I will list some in this article, you should consult with a competent tax professional for clarification.
Basically, you can offset all expenses relating to your business against the income you receive.
Income will be payments received from customers or consumers who sign up for your products and services.
Expenses will include:
* advertising - Pay-Per-Click expenses, classified ads expense, offline advertising
* dues and subscriptions for both periodicals and memberships in related organizations and trade groups
* business cards and stationery
* office supplies
* business insurance
* Telephone costs
* Internet access
One area that might be overlooked, and you MUST consult with a CPA here, is the deductibility of home office expenses. These will include a proportionate share of:
* Utilities
* Home maintenance
* landscaping
* Mortgage costs
* Home insurance, etc.
The proportionate share relates to the area in your home that is used solely for your home office as a percentage of your whole house.
Baby Boomers & Home Business
The kids are gone, married or just on their own. The house seems to get bigger and bigger with each passing year. We feel that we have finally reached a point where we can keep all the money we make. But its not necessarily true. With the economy where it is now, gas prices going through the roof, food prices reaching all time highs, the 76 million baby boomers are coming to the realization that all the money we make will not just be for us. We will have to continue to help our children financially.
So, how will we do this?
For those who are employed by someone else, you probably are not making enough money for everything you want and need. You might think about starting a home business to supplement your “9 - 5″ income. Where do you look? How do you avoid scams?
You have to do a lot of research to determine the best opportunity for you and your personality. There is affiliate marketing, direct selling, MLM, etc. You have to do what you feel comfortable with.
A problem those of us in our 50s and 60s will be motivation. Although we are a generation of do’ers and are exercising regularly, we are probably tired at the end of a workday. You really have to have a burning desire to make more money to overcome the psychological and physical issues inherent in getting up from the dinner table, going to your home office and starting a second career.
It can be tough, but certainly attainable. Like Nike says, “Just Do It!”

Website Visibility: 7 Ways to Get Your Website Noticed
Search engines are your secret weapon and a key to internet success. Every day, millions of people use search engines by typing in words or phrases to describe what they want. If your name pops up in the results list at Google, Yahoo!, MSN, Ask or any of dozens more like them, the benefits are golden.
The art of making that happen is called search engine optimization (SEO). SEO is all about increasing your online website visibility by creating just the right keywords to describe what you offer, organizing your site to capture search engine attention and building good links to your site from reputable sources. You can do much of this yourself, or seek help from one of the SEO services catering to small business.
Seven website visibility-boosting tips
- Use descriptive and informative text on each page of your website, choosing words that relate directly to your product, service or industry.
- Highlight and feature your most important content first, in a clear, uncluttered fashion.
- Ask other relevant sites to link to yours. One measure search engines now use to measure your site’s importance is the quality, and, to a lesser extent, volume of outside sites that refer to your own.
- Be sure to create distinct titles for each of the pages on your website, and use your keywords in the titles.
- Write descriptions that are clear, factual and free of excessive superlatives (best, cheapest, biggest). People prefer sites that are more factual and less “sales talk.”
- If your geographic location is relevant, use it in your site and make it part of your list of keywords.
- Don’t expect all search engines and online directories to find you. Many directories, such as the Yahoo! directory and the Open Directory project, offer paid submission options - take advantage of them.
